The Detroit Tigers Sports Medicine Staff recently held a continuing education and professional betterment meeting in Lakeland, Florida.

Throughout the three-day meeting, the group was introduced to, and certified in, Active Release Techniques® or ART®. ART® is a “soft tissue management system based on scientific evidence that muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue develop adhesions within and between them as a result of various injuries,” as first described by Dr. P. Michael Leahy.

Under the guidance of internationally renowned lead instructor and presenter Dr. Jason “Paj” Pajaczkowski, the group was educated on the theory and application of ART® for the Upper Extremity.

This course marked the inaugural professional betterment and advancement meeting that included all members of the Detroit Tigers Sports Medicine Team.

From the Senior Director of Medical Services all the way through to the newly hired Dominican Summer League certified athletic trainers, the organization views this program as a way to encourage a solidified medical vision and application from Rookie Ball to the Major Leagues.

Fifteen members of the Tigers’ staff participated in the seminar, which included personnel that charged with preparing athletes to play from San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic all the way to Detroit.

The weekend closed with professional discussion on implementation and future programs in a round table format.

Not only did the course improve the continuity of care throughout the organization, but it also instilled a strong professional bond between staff members from different backgrounds and levels.

It was an outstanding experience and the Detroit Tigers would like to personally thank Dr. Paj and the people at Active Release Techniques® headquarters for all their time and assistance in making this event possible.
