Status: Full-Time/ Exempt/Temp

The Houston Astros are seeking an individual to serve as a Minor League Physiotherapist Apprentice at our Dominican Republic Complex. This position will require daily interaction with the Team Athletic Trainers, field staff, team physicians, and colleagues within SM&P in addition to daily player care responsibilities.  Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, pre-season camps, coverage of the Dominican Summer League season, and post-season camps.  Additional off-season coverage and off-season player monitoring will be required as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist DR Physiotherapist with the following:
    • Assist the affiliate athletic trainers with prevention and care of athletic injuries and illnesses daily
    • Facilitating physician appointments and imaging
      • May require attending appointments with players
      • Assist with pre season and end of season physicals
    • Daily game and work out coverage including pre/post treatments and field set up
    • Thorough documentation of all injuries/illnesses including daily notes, physician notes, and other required documentation and reporting. Use of SOAP note style documentation required.
    • Ability to demonstrate professionalism in high stress situations
    • Communicate injury and rehab updates to Assistant Minor League Medical Coordinator and Minor League Rehab Coordinator
    • Administrative duties including:
      • Organization and managing athletic training room supplies
      • Daily athletic training room cleaning duties
      • Travel and logistics duties (day trips)
      • Travel kit inventory/packing for road trips
      • Hydrotherapy room maintenance
      • Regular communication with First Responder staff to ensure emergency equipment, medical cart & supplies are prepared and safely secured.
  • Will include day trip travel during the season.
  • High level of collaboration with colleagues from Sports Medicine & Performance staff (S&C, Nutrition, Mental Health & Performance) and other departments (e.g., Player Development)
  • Adhere to the organization’s policies and procedures as outlined in the Astros Handbook, SM&P Handbook, Medical Department Handbook, and direct communication from the Director of Sports Medicine and Performance
  • Other duties assigned by the Director of Sports Medicine and Performance

Education and/or Experience and Skills:

  • Degree in Physical Therapy or equivalent
  • Licensed Physiotherapist/Physical Therapist
  • CPR/AED certification
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish)

Work Environment

Position will work in an office and stadium environment. This role will be exposed to all weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.  The noise level is usually moderate but can be loud within the stadium environment.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and focused vision. Work is medium physical demand. Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. Medium strength is required to position patients for examination. May assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table.

Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time (temporary) position, and hours of work will vary with the season.  Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Travel

Travel is expected in this role.
