PBATS is excited to announce a new series called Get Personal with PBATS.
As part of this series, both Major and Minor League Baseball athletic trainers will be sharing both personal and professional information about themselves, in order to help younger athletic trainers understand the life of a professional baseball athletic trainer, the variety of roads traveled within this profession, recommendations across a wide variety of topics, as well as some information about how these pros worked their way into professional baseball.
Our third installment of the Q&A is brought to you by Cody Derby. Cody is the head athletic trainer for the West Michigan Whitecaps — an affiliate within the Detroit Tigers organization.
Let’s get into it!
1. Favorite moment as a baseball athletic trainer?
Answer: Winning the GCL Championship in 2018
2. Favorite aspect about athletic training in general?
Answer: Athletic Training, especially in professional baseball, is a profession that allows you to be the “go to” person in so many different aspects. Getting up every day knowing you get to create and foster relationships with people, along with helping athletes get better and stay healthy is a pretty good feeling. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new or build on what you already know.
3. Advice for young athletic trainers trying to get in baseball?
Answer: Set yourself apart from the rest and stand out. Make an effort to reach out and stay connected with people and continue to monitor internship opportunities through PBATS and other opportunities that may come up in your educational and/or current settings. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and seek opportunities that may seem like a far reach.
4. Hobby outside of work?
Answer: Photography, running, coffee shops, leisure reading, exploring research in different areas of interest.
5. Favorite Quote?
Answer: “Don’t worry about getting perfect, just keep getting better.” – Frank Peretti
6. What’s a book you’d recommend?
Answer: Passion Paradox by Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness
7. How many years have you been an Athletic Trainer?
Answer: 3 years
8. What is your personal motto to live by?
Answer: “Better Every Day.”
9. What was your favorite Athletic Training Class when you were in school?
Answer: Evaluation of Injuries. This is when I finally got a good grasp on applying what I learned in the classroom to apply in clinical sites.
10. Favorite city to travel to?
Answer: Nashville, TN
