SAN DIEGO (Dec. 9, 2022) — PBATS is proud to announce the induction of Richie Bancells into the PBATS Hall of Fame. Richie has had a long and illustrious career in the world of baseball, and is being recognized for their outstanding contributions to the game.

Richie Bancells is a legendary member of PBATS who started and ended his athletic training career with his beloved Baltimore Orioles.

During his storied career, Richie put together a lofty resume of awards including being named an athletic trainer in 1993 and 2004 for Major League Baseball’s All-Star Games. He is also a two-time recipient of the Major League Baseball Training Staff of the Year award with the Baltimore Orioles in 1995 and 2011. In 2011, Richie was also honored with the Orioles Advocates Herbert E. Armstrong Award. And that same year, Bancells was named an NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer.

As a charter member of PBATS, Richie spent many years contributing to the success of our society, along with his dedication to his players and the Orioles organization. Richie, as a charter member of PBATS, made a major impact on many younger athletic trainers throughout his career. Richie served three terms as PBATS president from 2008 to 2013, served as PBATS treasurer from 1994-1999, and secretary 2006 to 2007. During his term as treasurer, he turned PBATS financial situation into a positive one and restored financial stability within the society.

A beloved friend to PBATS members, Richie has been an integral member of PBATS since the very beginning and his work as an athletic trainer in Major League Baseball simply speaks for itself.

Richie has set a standard for excellence and integrity as an athletic trainer and is a man that we all admire and strive to emulate. The entire PBATS family congratulations Richie Bancells on his induction to the PBATS Hall of Fame — an honor that is extremely well deserved.

“We are thrilled to welcome Richie into the PBATS Hall of Fame,” said Ron Porterfield, President of PBATS. “Throughout his career, Richie has exemplified the best of what athletic training in Major League Baseball has to offer, and we are honored to recognize his achievements.”

The induction ceremony took place on December 9, 2022 at the MLB Winter Meetings, where Richie was able to enjoy the celebration with his closest friends and colleagues.
