Rangers and White Sox Deliver Impactful PLAY Campaign Events Promoting Health, Safety, and Active Lifestyles

CHICAGO – August 12th: White Sox athletic trainers host PLAY campaign at Rate Field.

The Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS) continued its 2025 PLAY Campaign this past week with two high-energy, youth-focused events hosted by the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox. Both stops brought local kids onto Major League fields for a unique combination of physical activity, player interaction, and powerful education on making healthy choices—made possible through the leadership of MLB athletic trainers and the ongoing support of PBATS partners, including the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, the Taylor Hooton Foundation, and Song for Charlie.

Rangers Host PLAY Campaign at Globe Life Field – August 8

On Friday, August 8, the Texas Rangers welcomed local youth to Globe Life Field for an unforgettable morning of fitness, fun, and learning. The event was led by Head Athletic Trainer Matt Lucero, alongside Assistant Athletic Trainers Jacob Newburn and Sean Fields, who guided participants through baseball-inspired warmups, movement drills, and injury prevention exercises designed to show kids how to care for their bodies like professional athletes.

Adding to the excitement, Rangers pitcher Josh Sborz joined the group for an engaging Q&A session. He shared insights from his career, offered advice on perseverance, and emphasized the importance of maintaining both physical and mental well-being. Sborz’s approachable style and genuine interest in the kids’ questions created an encouraging and memorable interaction for everyone involved.

The educational portion of the event was anchored by presentations from PBATS’ national partners. Donald Hooton Jr., President of the Taylor Hooton Foundation, spoke candidly about the dangers of performance-enhancing drug (PED) use and the value of playing fair. His message encouraged kids to build confidence in their natural abilities and focus on hard work rather than shortcuts.

Ed Ternan, founder of Song for Charlie, followed with a vital session on the risks of counterfeit pills and the importance of making informed, safe choices. His presentation stressed the need for open conversations with trusted adults and reinforced the idea that protecting one’s health starts with knowledge and awareness.

The Rangers event was supported by the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, which provided resources and materials to ensure that the day was not only educational but also accessible and engaging for all participants.

White Sox Welcome Youth to Rate Field – August 12

Just four days later, on August 12, the Chicago White Sox hosted their own PLAY Campaign event atRate Field, creating another special experience for local kids. Head Athletic Trainer James Kruk and Assistant Athletic Trainers Josh Fallin and Hyeon Kim led the on-field activities, bringing their expertise to life through stretching routines, agility work, and baseball-specific drills.

The White Sox made the day even more impactful by involving four players—Drew Thorpe, Shane Smith, Dan Altavilla, and Chase Meidroth—who each took time to work directly with participants. The players shared stories from their journeys in baseball, offered tips on staying active and healthy, and stressed the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, and dedication. Their presence created a powerful connection between the youth and the professional game, showing that the habits and values they learn now can help them succeed both in sports and in life.

As in Texas, Donald Hooton Jr. of the Taylor Hooton Foundation delivered his critical message about PED awareness and the importance of competing with integrity. His talk underscored that long-term success is built on character, preparation, and respect for the game.

The event was once again made possible through the support of the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, whose commitment to health education and community outreach has helped PBATS expand the PLAY Campaign’s reach to thousands of children nationwide.

Continuing the Mission

The Rangers and White Sox events exemplify what the PLAY Campaign is all about: combining the excitement of professional baseball with hands-on health education and mentorship. By partnering with MLB athletic trainers, players, and nonprofit organizations, PBATS is able to create experiences that not only inspire kids to stay active but also equip them with the knowledge and skills to make smart, safe choices in their daily lives.

As the 2025 PLAY Campaign continues its summer tour, the message remains consistent across every city: take care of your body, make informed decisions, and always play the game—and life—the right way.
